Major Lunar Standstill moonrise, Chimney Rock, Colorado
The moonspiral’s depiction of scientific information is based upon what we are calling “Native Science”. This depiction interprets ancestral Puebloan rock art as incorporating the forms of celestial scientific knowledge, and then builds upon this base to add more celestial patterns. The resulting graphic depiction goes beyond traditional western representations and presents the mind with a new medium where additional patterns are able to be easily imagined. This inspires a sense of discovery and an urge to understand more deeply. The overall effect of this and other native science depictions is to reinvigorate people’s wonder at native cultural heritage and art forms as well as interest in further study in Earth and celestial sciences.
